Patent Ductus Arteriosus Stent


It is estimated that over 3,000 babies are born each year in the United States with cyanotic heart disease; a significant fraction of whom can benefit from temporary placement of a Patent Ductus Arteriosus Stent (PDA) described here. In patients born with cyanotic congenital heart disease, it is essential to temporarily maintain a patent (i.e. open) ductus arteriosus, a shunt connecting the pulmonary artery to the aortic artery, which normally closes shortly after birth. After the patient reaches a certain size, the stent is removed and the heart is permanently repaired via surgery. There is currently no commercially available pediatric PDA stent. Currently, doctors rely on invasive surgical techniques or adult coronary stents to keep the ductus open. Vanderbilt researchers have created a low-cost, removable PDA stent for pediatric patients.


This Removable Patent Ductus Arteriosus Stent has the following specific advantages over the current designs:

1. Interventional rather than surgical solution
2. Potential for use of smaller catheter and concomitant reduction of trauma
3. Improved flexibility due to single filament design|
4. Designed to reduce tissue damage during retraction

The stent described here provides a safer, non-surgical way to temporarily treat certain cyanotic congenital heart diseases in infants. The stent can be removed in conjunction with conventional surgical repair of the heart vessels, once the infant has reach a more ideal size and weight.
