Prior to the start of the 2012 Fiscal Year the leadership at Vanderbilt University envisioned a new way of commercializing technology that repositioned the Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization (CTTC) and enabled a year of tremendous growth and refinement. The responsibility for our office - previously known as the Office of Tech Transfer and Enterprise Development - was entrusted to Dr. Gordon Bernard, who oversees the management of many aspects of research and development in the Vanderbilt Medical School, including the Office of Contracts Management, the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, and the Institutional Review Board, among others. Soon after this shift in administration, Alan Bentley was recruited to serve as the new assistant vice chancellor for technology transfer, and the reinvention of the office began. CTTC embraced the opportunity to expand its capabilities and services to match the rapidly increasing interest by faculty, staff and students to move Vanderbilt innovations from the lab bench to the marketplace to benefit society. As part of this expansion effort, the Center strategically recruited personnel with advanced science degrees and deep professional experience to compliment the Center’s existing strengths; implemented a detailed, transparent process for consistently and professionally managing commercialization efforts; and a Faculty Advisory Committee was formed to give this critical stakeholder group a voice in the direction of the Center. The Center refined its mission to strengthen the attention placed on transferring technologies to the marketplace. This refined purpose led to the implementation of numerous daily operational improvements that increased productivity, inventor service, value creation and societal impact.
