How does music shape religious identity in Music City USA? How does religion shape the city’s music? What religious and spiritual experiences shape how music is listened to, performed, consumed, or otherwise experienced in this city? In what sense is the music industry shaped by, and a shaper of, religion? In short, is music a religion in Nashville, and is religion inherently musical here?

God in Music City is a semester-long series of events that includes the release of a CD compilation, an undergraduate course, a bus tour of Nashville houses of worship, a capstone conference, and musical events at the Bluebird Café, the Second Presbyterian Church, the Basement, and the Blair School of Music's Turner Recital Hall.

Sponsored by the Music, Religion and the South Project at the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture at Vanderbilt University, God in Music City brings together scholars, students, local performers, religious leaders, and community members in order to focus on the ways in which local and regional identity is both formed and informed by religious and musical practice in Music City USA—Nashville, Tennessee.
