NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - Senior Sarah Riske (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township)
was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after
leading the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team to wins over
No. 24-ranked South Carolina and top-ranked Florida. It was
the first time the Commodores’ only senior has received
the honor.
The Commodores are coming off a 7-0 sweep of the Gamecocks
and a 4-3 win over the Gators. The Commodores are currently
13-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. They are ranked No. 10 nationally.
The 13th-ranked Riske scored a straight-set win over South
Carolina’s Kathy Boyanovich, 7-6, 6-0, on Friday. She
then came back on Sunday to defeat 37th-ranked Julia Scaringe
of Florida, 6-2, 7-5.
Riske is having a stellar singles season, as she currently
boasts a 18-6 overall and a 13-3 dual-match record. She is
only five singles wins shy of eclipsing the 100-victory plateau.
Riske has competed against 13 players who are currently ranked
in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top 50.
Riske also teamed with junior Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield,
Mo./Parkway Central) to go 2-0 in doubles. The fourth-ranked
team notched their 13th and 14th dual-match wins of the season,
as they defeated the 30th-ranked team of Boyanovich and Magda
Wojdylo of South Carolina, 8-3. The duo also clinched the
critical doubles point for the Commodores, as they defeated
14th-ranked Lindsay Dawaf and Julie Rotondi of Florida, 9-7.
