Riske Advances to Second Round in NCAA Singles Championship 5/19/03
Senior to Compete in Singles and Doubles on Tuesday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Vanderbilt senior Sarah Riske (McMurray, Pa.) will move on the second round on the NCAA Singles Championship by virtue of her straight-set victory of Virginia's Jennifer Tuchband on Monday at the Ring Tennis Complex. Riske, who is seeded alphabetically 9-16 in the tournament, defeated the 70th-ranked Tuchband, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Riske, who earned All-American honors in both singles and doubles this year, will take on Kentucky's Sarah Witten at 9 a.m. (EST) Tuesday in the second round. Witten defeated Arizona's Dianne Hollands in three grueling sets. Riske split her two meetings this season with Witten, while this will be her first possible meeting with Hollands.

Riske improves her 2002-03 overall record to 25-9 with the win. She has also won 102 career singles matches.

Junior Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield, Mo.), who was one of the alternates to get into the main draw, fell to seventh-seeded Adria Engel of Arizona State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Riske and Tsoubanos will take part in the doubles competition on Tuesday, as they will take on Middle Tennessee State's team of Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell at 12:30 p.m. (EST). Riske and Tsoubanos, who have posted a 31-7 record this year, are the tournament's third seed.
