Women's
Tennis Defeats Arkansas, 7-0, in Final Regular-Season
Home Match 3/30/03
Riske and Scott win their final regular-season home
matches
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - On a very special afternoon at the Brownlee
O. Currey Indoor Tennis Center, Vanderbilt senior Sarah
Riske and junior Kori Scott played their final regular-season
home matches as members of the women's tennis team.
Riske, who will graduate in May, and Scott, who will
graduate in December, helped lead the 13th-ranked Commodores
to a, 7-0, sweep over Arkansas on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Vanderbilt improves to 15-3 overall and
6-2 in the Southeastern Conference, while Arkansas falls
to 8-10 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
Riske, a native of McMurray, Pa., had a fairly easy
afternoon, as she won both her doubles and singles matches
with little trouble. Riske joined partner Aleke Tsoubanos
at the No. 1 position to defeat Anna Dybicz and Iliana
Pacheco, 8-0. Vanderbilt's top duo avenged their loss
on Friday afternoon to LSU's top team.
The No. 11-ranked Riske played a pretty flawless match
in singles, as she defeated Simona Arghire, 6-1, 6-1,
to give Vanderbilt its first singles point of the afternoon.
She has now boosted her 2002-03 overall record to 20-6,
while having picked up her 97th career singles win.
Scott,
a native of Houston, Texas, has overcome injury throughout
her days at Vanderbilt to have a very successful career.
On Sunday, she edged out Monika Dybicz in three sets,
6-2, 3-6, 10-4, at the No. 6 position. Scott has now
won 35 career singles matches.
To go along with Riske and Tsoubanos' doubles victory,
the Commodores had no problems in the other two matches.
The 26th-ranked team of junior Kelly Schmandt and sophomore
Audra Falk defeated Arghire and Melissa Cornett at the
No. 2 spot, 8-2. Freshman Ashley Schellhas and sophomore
Annie Menees closed things out with an 8-3 victory over
Monika Dybicz and Megan Ferreira at the third doubles
position.
Schmandt and Tsoubanos both had little trouble in their
singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
Schmandt defeated Anna Dybicz, 6-2, 6-1, while Tsoubanos
cruised by Ferreira, 6-2, 6-2. Schmandt and Tsoubanos
are a combined 29-5 in dual matches this year.
At the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, Schellhas and Menees
both won their matches in three sets. Schellhas defeated
Pacheco, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, while Menees clawed out a 6-1,
2-6, 6-4, win over Cornett.
The
Commodores will now begin a three-match roadtrip at
1 p.m. Friday against SEC Western Division foe Auburn
in Auburn, Ala. The last time these two teams squared
off was in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament
in Nashville, which Vanderbilt won, 4-0.
