Women's Tennis Defeats Baylor to Stay Undefeated,
Tenn. - The Vanderbilt women's tennis team closed out
a five-match homestand on Sunday, as it defeated Big
12 power Baylor, 6-1, at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis
Center. The Commodores will now head to Durham, N.C.
next weekend with a perfect 5-0 record. The loss drops
the Bears to 0-1 on the season.
After a difficult match on Saturday against Virginia,
head coach Geoff Macdonalds' squad was able to gather
itself and play some of its best tennis of the season.
Leading the way was senior Sarah Riske, who defeated
Vida Mulec in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and the No. 1
position. Mulec entered the dual-match season ranked
No. 45 nationally; however, she was no match for the
Commodores only senior.
After looking a little sluggish in the first set, junior
Aleke Tsoubanos stepped up her level of play in defeating
Anna Moncolova, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Fellow junior Kelly Schmandt
stayed perfect on the season (5-0), as she defeated
Stephanie Balzert in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Audra Falk continued her dominance, as she
moved her 2002-03 record to 10-0 with a straight-set
victory over Daria Potapova, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 4
spot. Freshman Ashley Schellhas had no problems at the
No. 5 slot, as she breezed by Zuzana Krchnakova, 6-0,
The three Vanderbilt doubles teams had no problems
in any of its matches. The Commodores surrendered only
eight games in the three eight game pro-sets. Vanderbilt
is now a perfect 15-0 in doubles matches in 2003.
Vanderbilt returns to action at 12 p.m. Saturday, January
25, against Ivy League foe Pennsylvania, who is ranked
No. 51 nationally, at Duke University. The Commodores
will then take on No. 4-ranked Duke at 12 p.m. Sunday.
