Women's Tennis Escapes with Win over Virginia, 4-3
Tenn. - The No. 8-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team
was pushed to the limit against a very good Virginia
team on Saturday afternoon at the Brownlee O. Currey
Tennis Center. The Commodores were able to escape with
a narrow 4-3 victory, and keep its record unscathed
at 4-0. With the loss, the No. 54-ranked Cavaliers fall
to 0-1 on the season.
While the six singles matches count for six points in
the team scoring, the most important point of the afternoon
for the Commodores came in the doubles portion of the
match. While the Commodores won all three matches, the
Cavaliers pushed them in every one.
Vanderbilt No. 1 team of senior Sarah Riske and junior
Aleke Tsoubanos battled to a 9-7 win over Virginia's
Henriette Williams and Jennifer Tuchband. The Vanderbilt
duo trailed for the majority of the match, but were
able to break Williams and Tushband in the 15th game
to take an 8-7 lead and hold on for the win.
Sophomore Audra Falk and junior Kelly Schmandt won their
doubles match 8-5 over Lori Stern and Kristen James.
At the No. 3 position, sophomore Annie Menees and freshman
Ashley Schellhas were able to hold on for an 8-6 win
over Marta and Dora Bechliwanis.
In singles, Riske clinched the win for the Commodores,
as she won a tough three-set match over Williams. Williams
played a very solid match, especially from the baseline.
Her style caused Riske to commit a lot of unforced errors
in the first set, as she won it 6-3. In the second and
third sets, Riske was able to figure Williams game out
and cruise to scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Falk continued to be Vanderbilt's most dominant player,
as she defated James handily, 6-1, 6-0. In her first
four matches this season, Falk has given up a mere four
games in eight sets. Schmandt was Vanderbilt's other
singles winner, as she held off Stern in two sets, 6-4,
The Commodores will not have a lot of time to rest,
as they will take on No. 43-ranked Baylor at 12 p.m.
