Women's Tennis Cruises by Middle Tennessee State,
7-0 1/15/03
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - The Vanderbilt women's tennis team (3-0) picked
up its third win by a score of 7-0, as it defeated in-state
foe Middle Tennessee State (0-1) on Wednesday afternooon
at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center.
The Raiders gave the Commodores all they could handle,
especially at the No. 1 singles position and in the
doubles matches. Vanderbilt senior Sarah Riske was pushed
to the limit against MTSU's Manon Kruse. After dropping
the first set in a tiebreaker, Riske pulled herself
together to take the next two matches, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Aleke Tsoubanos continued her strong play for
the Commdores, as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory
over Jennifer Klashchka. Junior Kelly Schmandt, sophomores
Audra Falk, Annie Menees and freshman Ashley Schellhas
all won their singles matches in straight sets. The
four gave up a combined total of 12 games in their eight
sets.
In doubles, the No. 2-ranked team of Riske and Tsoubanos
had no trouble with Kruse and Stacy Varnell, as they
won decisively, 8-1. The doubles tandems of Falk and
junior Kori Scott and Menees and Schellhas had a more
difficult time, but still won their matches 8-5 and
8-6, respectivley.
The Commodores return to action at 12 p.m. Saturday,
January 18, against head coach Geoff Macdonald's alma-mater
Virginia at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center. Admission
for the match is free.
