Women's Tennis Defeats Michigan State and Louisville
in 2003 Season Openers 1/12/03
 NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - The Vanderbilt women's tennis team (2-0) had
no problems against Michigan State and Louisville on
Sunday in its 2003 season opening dual matches at the
Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center. In their two matches
(12 singles, six doubles), the Commodores surrendered
only 37 total games.
Sarah Riske kicked off her final dual season, as she
cruised in both of her singles matches at the No. 1
position. In the morning session, she defeated Michigan
State's Caroline Lay in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. In
her afternoon match against Louisville's Marie Louise
Frolich-Hansen, she was challenged a little bit more
but still won, 6-2, 6-3.
Riske and junior Aleke Tsoubanos, the No. 1-ranked collegiate
doubles team in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association, had no problems in either of their matches.
The two defeated Lay and Jean Willman of Michigan State,
8-2. They returned later to beat Frolich-Hansen and
Kelly Taylor of Louisville, 8-1. Tsoubanos was also
successful in both her singles matches, as she surrendered
a total of five games in four sets.
Sophomore Audra Falk might have had the easiest day
of all the Vanderbilt players, as in two singles and
two doubles matches, she allowed a total of three games.
Falk and doubles partner Kelly Schmandt won both of
their matches, 8-0. Schmandt was also undefeated in
her two singles matches.
Junior Kori Scott (2-0), sophomore Annie Menees (3-0)
and freshman Ashley Schellhas (3-0) combined to go 8-0
in their singles and doubles matches.
The Commodores return to action at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday
when they take on in-state rival Middle Tennessee State
at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center. The Commodores
defeated the Raiders last year 6-1 in Nashville.
