Tennis Downs Alabama
The
No. 6 Vanderbilt women's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory
Sunday afternoon over No. 41 Alabama at the Currey Tennis
Center. The Commodores improve to 22-3 overall and 8-2 in
the SEC win.
The
'Dores opened up a 1-0 lead as they took the doubles point.
The team of Jenny Miller (Savannah, Ga.) and Audra Falk (Cincinnati,
Ohio) woin at No. 3 doubles before Kate Burson (Washington,
D.C.) and Annie Menees (St. Louis, Mo.) won at No. 2 doubles
to clinch the point. The win was Burson's 100th career doubles
win and was the first part of a record setting day for the
senior. In singles play, Vanderbilt pushed their lead to 2-0
on Burson's win at No. 3 singles. It was her 198th career
win (singles and doubles) which set a new Vanderbilt school
record (previous record was 197 held by Julie Ditty). Miller
won at No. 2 to make the score 3-0 before Aleke Tsoubanos
(Chesterfield, Mo.) clinched the match with her win at No.
5 singles. Sarah Riske won at No. 1 singles and Falk won at
No. 6 to complete the 6-1 Commodore win.
"I
am pleased with our effort today against a quality team like
Alabama," stated Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald.
"I hope we can continue to improve because we play two
tough teams this week in Texas and Kentucky."
The
Commodores continue their homestand on Tueday as they host
No. 14 Texas at 2:30 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center.
