Mission Statement
|
The Vanderbilt Tennis Camp is committed to quality teaching in a patient,
positive atmosphere. We are dedicated to teaching each camper the techniques,
tactics, and training necessary to improve in tennis, and enjoy this lifelong
sport. Each camper will receive the best coaching and attention, and we will
adapt all drills and match play to the level of each player. This camp is
designed to provide a rich learning environment for boys and girls ages 7
to 17 (beginner to advanced).
We love teaching the game of tennis, and we know that everyone who attends
will improve their skills, learning the fun and fundamentals of this great
game

Geoff Macdonald - Camp Director
|
|

Over the past eight years, the Vanderbilt women's tennis program has gone from
a .500 program to competing for a national championship. There is no coincidence
that the turnaround occurred over the eight-year period since Geoff Macdonald
took over the program. One of the top coaches in the country, Macdonald has
transformed the program into one known for players' rapid improvement, commitment
to coaching and an unrivaled academic excellence. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt,
Macdonald coached at Duke and LSU. A graduate of the University of Virginia,
Coach Macdonald won the ACC singles title, the ACC MVP award, and the C. Alphonso
Smith award for outstanding sportsmanship. After college, he played the Pro
Tour, achieving an ATP singles ranking of 200th in the world, and 120th in doubles.
Coach Macdonald is married to Kate Daniels, an Associate Professor or English
at Vanderbilt. They have three children: Sam, age 17, Gus, 12, and Janey, 9.
|
David Thornton - Assistant Camp Director
|
|

Coach Thornton is widely regarded as one of the finest young coaches in the
country and an excellent teacher of the game. He brings a highly successful
background to Vanderbilt where he has spent countless hours giving individual
attention to players and helping them improve to new heights. Previously the
Head Coach for Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) for six years, David
took over a struggling program and transformed it into the perennial champion
of the Ohio Valley Conference. For his efforts, Coach Thornton was named OVC
Coach of the year in 1996, 1997 and 2000. A standout player at MTSU, he was
a 3-time All-Conference performer, and, after college, played professionally
in Europe. David is married to the former Michelle Wilson.
