Soccer Downs Mississippi State 4-2
The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team evened their SEC
record with a 4-2 victory Friday afternoon over Mississippi
State in Starkville. The Commodores broke a 1-1 tie with three
second half goals to earn the victory.
“I am proud that we have different players stepping up
each game” stated Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Hill.
“I think we are starting to believe that things are going
our way and it is nice to get back to .500 in the SEC. I think
we are starting to peak as a team”
The Bulldogs (9-6, 2-3) struck first on their home turf as
Brie Wallace converted a Jessie Moore pass to give Mississippi
State a 1-0 lead just seven and a half minutes into the contest.
However, the Commodores tied the game in the 19th minute as
Jennifer Lewis (Birmingham, Ala.) tallied an unassisted goal.
The game remained tied 1-1 at the half.
The Commodores (5-6, 3-3) came out strong in the second half
and Kat Carroll (Brentwood, Tenn.) gave Vanderbilt the lead
less than four minutes into the seconf half. Five minutes
later, laura Hershenow (Littleton, Colo.) notched an unassisted
goal to put Vanderbilt up 3-1. Mississippi State cut the lead
to one on Amy Van Zandt’s goal six minutes later, but
Erin Higgins’ (Duluth, Ga.) in the 85th minutes sealed
the Commodore 4-2 win.
“Today we were beaten by a very talented Vanderbilt team,”
said Mississippi State coach Neil McGuire. “They were
effective in the air as well as on the ground. Those, combined,
will make any team difficult to beat.”
Overall the Commodores outshot the Bulldogs 15-7. Stacee Sproul
(Peachtree City, Ga.) made two saves in net for Vanderbilt
as she earned the victory. Krystal Werges made five saves
for Mississippi State.
The Commodores will return to action on Sunday as they travel
to Ole Miss. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Oxford and
can be seen live on SEC-TV.
