Women's Soccer Drops SEC Contest to Kentucky, 2-1 9/28/02

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Vanderbilt women's soccer team fell in its SEC opener to Kentucky 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Kentucky Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Commodores fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the SEC, while the Wildcats up their record to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.

With the win, Kentucky closes the all-time gap between the two teams to 10-7. Along with that, the Wildcats have now won four straight games against the Commodores.

Kentucky got things going in the final minute of the first half when midfielder Elizabeth Ramsey lofted a shot over Vanderbilt goalkeeper Esther Thompson's head. The goal was scored off of an initial one-two passing sequence from midfielders Danielle Slupski and Christal Mattingly.

The Wildcats carried the momentum over from their late first half goal into the second half, as it didn't take long for them to strike again. This time forward Lauren Russell was on the receiving end of a one-two passing sequence from Ramsey and Mattingly.

Despite being down 2-0, Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Hill's squad continued to battle. The Commodores determination paid off as in the 61st minute, midfielder Katharine Carroll scored on a header following a pass from midfielder Molly Wilson.

With the lead now 2-1, that would be the closest Vanderbilt would get as Kentucky held on for the win. The Commodores finished the game outshooting the Wildcats 14-9. One of the most lopsided statistics of the game was Vanderbilt having nine corner kicks to Kentucky's zero.

After one month away from the friendly confines of the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex, the women's soccer team returns home to take on SEC power Florida at 6 p.m. Friday, October 4. The women's game will kick off a double-header of action that night, as the men's team will play Bradley immediately following the women's game.
