Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision To No. 4-Ranked Texas 9/20/02
AUSTIN,
Texas - The Vanderbilt womens soccer team hung tough
the entire contest against No. 4-ranked Texas, but was not
able to hold off the Longhorns as it fell 1-0 in front of
a crowd of 3,406 people on Friday evening at Mike A. Myers
Stadium. With the loss, the Commodores fall to 1-4, while
the Longhorns move their overall record to 4-2.
The only goal of the game came in the 58th minute when when
Michelle Wickwire scored when she tucked the ball inside the
far post following a corner kick. The initial combination
of passes came from Kati McBain and Kristen Teter, which allowed
Wickwire to score her first goal of the season.
After an solid first half performance by the Commodores, they
were only able to muster up three shots in the second half.
Senior midfielder Katharine Carroll led Vanderbilt with three
shots on the evening. Texas outshot Vanderbilt 17-9 for the
game. Vanderbilt goalkeepeer Esther Thompson fell once again
the Commodores scoring drought, as she allowed the one goal
while registering three saves.
The Commodores picked up their level of aggressiveness, as
they were called for an incredible 26 fouls, four of which
were yellow cards. The Longhorns were only called for seven
infractions.
Vanderbilt continues its Texas swing at 1 p.m. Sunday when
it takes on Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
The Lady Mustangs own a 5-2-1 record all-time against the
Commodores.
