Soccer Drops Double-Overtime Contest To Loyola Marymount,
2-1 9/15/02
 WINSTON-SALEM,
N.C - The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1
double-overtime heartbreaker to Loyola Marymount on Sunday
afternoon in Wake Forest/adidas Invitational. In the 108th
minute, Kylie Beren scored on a penalty kick after a Vanderbilt
defender touch the ball with her hand in the box. With the
loss, the Commodores fall to 1-3 on the season, while the
Lions move their record to 4-1.
The Commodores jumped on the board in the 33rd minute when
midfielder Marissa O’Leary scored her first goal of her
career. Despite trailing 8-5 in the shot category, the Commodores
went into the locker room tied at 1-1 with the Lions. Goalkeeper
Esther Thompson finished the half with five saves for the
Commodores.
Neither team was able to grab an advantage throughout the
second half. Despite being outshot 5-1 in the second half,
the Commodores were able to send the game to overtime tied
at 1-1.
Both teams continued to battle through overtime until finally
Beren received a penalty shot for Loyola Marymount, which
she eventually converted on giving to the Lions the win in
the teams first-ever meeting. For the contest, LMU outshot
Vanderbilt, 16-8. Thompson had a strong game in the loss,
as she tallied 10 saves.
Vanderbilt returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, September 20,
when it takes on the nationally-ranked Longhorns of the University
of Texas in Austin, Texas. The Commodores and Longhorns have
played four time prior to the upcoming meeting, with Vanderbilt
holding a 3-1 edge. The Longhorns (2-2) fell to No. 1-ranked
North Carolina on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.
