Women’s Soccer Defeats Belmont In Exhibition Finale, 6-0 8/27/02

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team concluded the exhibition portion of its 2002 schedule on Tuesday evening by defeating cross-town rival Belmont, who was playing with only 13 players, 6-0 at the Whitten Soccer Complex. The Commodores concluded their preseason games by outscoring their opponents, 10-0.

Instead of playing two 45-minute halves, the two teams played three 30-minute periods due to the lack of players available on the Bruins’ squad. For the game, the Commodores outshot the Bruins, 20-2. Fourteen of Vanderbilt’s 20 shots came in the first period.

Vanderbilt did not waste any time getting on the board, as 33 seconds into the contest junior Laura Hershenow scored off an assist from senior Katharine Carroll. For an offensive standpoint, Carroll was the story of the game, as she dished out the one assist while also scoring Vanderbilt’s third and sixth goals of the game.

The other three goals for head coach Ronnie Hill’s squad came from sophomore Jennifer Lewis, junior Jen Talavera and freshman Ashley Duffy, who all scored unassisted goals.

Juniors Stacee Sproul and Lauren Whitt did not see one Belmont shot on net in combining for the shutout. Despite giving up six goals, Belmont goalkeeper Ali Young registered six saves.

The Commodores will begin their 2002 regular season at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 1, against Saint Louis University at the newly constructed Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Admission for Sunday’s contest is $3 for adults, $1 for children under the age of 14 and free for students with a valid college ID. Vanderbilt’s game with Saint Louis is the only home contest for the entire month of September, as it will play its next six games away form home.
