VANDERBILT OUSTS IN-STATE RIVAL TENNESSEE, 3-1
The Commodores are now on a two game win streak and own a 4-6 overall and 2-2 Southeastern Conference record. The Lady Vols dropped their fifth straight match, falling to 3-6, 2-2 on the year. "We've been creating scoring opportunities all year, but now we're finally connecting on them," said VU head coach Robbie Church. "We've also gotten healthier since the beginning of the season and become more explosive.²" Outshooting the Lady Vols, 24-13, the Commodores dominated most of the game. VU had a 1-0 lead in the first half thanks to Talavera's first goal of the game on an assist from teammate Laurie Black. Talavera scored on a 15 yard shot after going one-on-one with UT goalie Ellen Dean. Vanderbilt came out strong in the beginning of the second half when they scored two straight goals within 43 seconds of each other. Talavera headed in a ball from Szurovy at the 65:23 mark for the 2-0 lead. Senior Laura Koerner connected on a pass from Szurovy off a keeper deflection at 66:06 for the third goal of the game. "We've had a tough start to our season and now the goals are finally coming," said Szurovy. "The good shots we've been taking all year are falling in now." Tennessee prevented the VU shutout by tallying a goal one minute and 19 seconds after Koerner's goal. UT's Kendyl Michner found the net off of Tara Minnax¹s corner kick. Vanderbilt goalie Jessie Wolfe recorded a career-high six saves in the game. Dean also set a career-high with 12 saves for the Lady Vols. The Commodores travel to the Northeast for their next two matches.
