Vanderbilt's
Talavera Named SEC Player of the Week
October 2, 2000
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Vanderbilt's Jen Talavera was named the
SEC Women's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced Monday from
the conference office. Talavera is the first Commodore to earn player
of the week honors since Lauren Whitt in 1998.
Talavera, a sophomore forward
from Kenner, La., made a big splash this past weekend by coming off
the bench to score three goals in two games, including the game winner
at Alabama. After struggling with injuries early in the season, these
were Talavera's first points of the season and vaulted her into a
tie for first on the team with three goals and third in points with
six.
Against Auburn, Talavera
put Vanderbilt on the board first when she took an Erin Higgins assist
and scored her first goal of the season. Her second goal of the Auburn
game came in more dramatic fashion. With two seconds remaining in
regulation and the Commodores down by one goal, Talavera took a Kat
Carroll assist and scored to tie the game at two goals apiece. Vanderbilt
would go on to defeat Auburn in overtime.
Less than 48 hours later,
Talavera pulled off some more heroics in Tuscaloosa, Ala. With Vanderbilt
and Alabama tied at one, the sophomore got the turn on a Crimson Tide
defender and scored an unassisted goal that would end up being the
game winner as the Commodores went on to claim the 2-1 victory.
Talavera and the rest of
the Commodores will look to extend their three-game winning streak
when they host South Carolina and Florida this weekend in Nashville,
Tenn.
