VANDERBILT TIES NO. 17 SMU IN DOUBLE OVERTIME IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAMEOctober 29, 1999
The Vanderbilt women's soccer team gave the 17th-ranked Southern Methodist Lady Mustangs a battle in a 0-0 double overtime tie on Friday night in Nashville, Tenn. It was the final regular season match for the Commodores who honored the senior class of Laura Koerner, Asta Helgadottir and Katie Peifer. With the tie, Vanderbilt now owns an 8-9-1 overall record, 6-3 in Southeastern Conference play. SMU moved to 12-5-1 overall on the year. The match was evenly played, but the Commodores had more chances to score out shooting SMU, 17-14. VU had 11 shots on goal to SMUšs five. On corner kicks, Vanderbilt also had the advantage, 12-5. The Commodores had their best opportunity to score when SMU's Holly Broome intentionally fouled Laura Koerner on her run to the goal with only 33 seconds left in the second half. Broome was ejected from the game on a red card. Asta Helgadottir took the free kick, but her shot hit the top of the post. The game would go into overtime. SMU played a man down the rest of the game, but stepped up its play to prevent the Commodores from scoring. The game would end in a draw after 120 minutes. Koerner led the VU attack with six shots, while VU goalie Jessie Wolfe came up with five big saves. The Commodores go into postseason play this Thursday, Nov. 4 in the SEC Tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt. VU meets South Carolina at 7:30 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Soccer Field.
