VANDERBILT WINS BIG OVER MISSISSIPPI STATE, 6-0
Oct. 15, 1999 Junior Kim Szurovy tallied a career-high three goals, including the game-winner to help the Vanderbilt women's soccer team shut out Mississippi State, 6-0, on Friday night in Southeastern Conference play. Midfielder Asta Helgadottir also came up big for the Commodores with one goal and two assists. With the win, the Vanderbilt women's soccer program garnered its 150th career victory in its 10th year of existence. The Commodores dominated the entire match out-shooting the Bulldogs 25-2. VU also had more scoring opportunities with nine corner kicks. Szurovy tallied the first goal of the night and the game-winner only six minutes into the match on an eight-yard shot that found the top, right part of MSU's net. Junior Katie Stegall gave VU the 2-0 lead at 16:26 with a shot off of a Mississippi State rebound in the box. Twenty minutes in the game, Helgadottir scored on a corner kick from Szurovy. Freshman Jen Talavera then knocked in a MSU deflection seven minutes later putting the Commodores ahead of the Bulldogs, 4-0. Szurovy tallied the the last two goals of the night. Her second score of the evening came at the 33:20 mark on a five-yard shot. She converted on passes from Koerner and Helgadottir. In the second half, Szurovy found the near post at 72:20, giving the Commodores the 6-0 win. VU split time with its goalkeepers Jessie Wolfe and Katie Betzwieser for the shared shutout. The Commodores improved to 5-9 overall, 3-3 in conference play. MSU fell to 3-13, 1-5 in the SEC.
