NO. 24 IOWA STATE RALLIES TO DEFEAT VANDERBILT, 3-2
Sept. 17, 1999 Twenty-fourth ranked Iowa State (6-1, 1-1 Big 12)came from behind scoring three second half goals to defeat the Vanderbilt (2-5, 0-2 SEC) women's soccer team, 3-2 on Friday night. The game was tied at two all, until Iowa State connected on the game-winning goal with two minutes left. "We played pretty well offensively and had the opportunity to win this game," said VU head coach Robbie Church. "We were the better the team tonight. Eventually our hard work will pay off and things will go our way." Vanderbilt's Laura Koerner tallied her first goal of the season and gave the Commodores a 1-0 lead at the 34:17 mark. She handled a pass from teammate Kate Elia and went one-on-one with Iowa State goalkeeper Lynley Hilligoss. Koerner beat Hilligoss with a shot that fournd the left side of the net. VU would go into halftime with the one goal lead. The lead didn't last for long as ISU's Lindsey Rector knocked in a 20 yard shot that sailed of VU goalkeeper Lizzy Johnson's hands just three minutes into the second half. The Cyclones would take the 2-1 lead three minutes later at the 51:34 mark on a goal from Erica Florez. The Commodores tied the game, 2-2, five minutes after ISU's goal. Elia connected on a five yard shot on two quick passes from Koerner and Kim Szurovy. The match looked like it would go into sudden death overtime, but Iowa State scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left in the game on a 10 yard shot from Florez. Vanderbilt fell to 2-5 overall, while Iowa State improved to 6-1 with the win. The Commodores travel to Houston, Texas, to take on Texas A&M this Sunday in the Adidas Classic.
