Vanderbilt
Loses to Georgia
at SEC
Tournament
November 3, 2000
ATHENS, Ga. The Vanderbilt women's soccer team ended its
run in the 2000 SEC Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Georgia in Friday
night's semifinal match. Vanderbilt drops to 12-9 on the season, while
Georgia improves to 11-8-2.
The Commodores took the
first lead of the game when freshman Michelle Bruntlett (pictured)
headed in a crossing pass from freshman Emily Wilpers at the 22:37
mark.
But just 10 seconds later,
Georgia countered with an equalizing score. Jessica Winton slipped
a pass behind the Vanderbilt defense to Nicole Greathead, who fired
a shot past Commodore freshman goalkeeper Stacee Sproul from 10 yards
out.
After heading into halftime
tied 1-1, Georgia's Stacy Hunt scored the game-winning goal at the
54:18 mark to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 victory.
Vanderbilt defeated Georgia
by an identical score in the teams' only regular-season meeting Oct.
15 in Athens. The Bulldogs will make the school's first-ever appearance
in the SEC Tournament championship game when they face top-seeded
Florida Sunday afternoon.

Post-Game Quotes
Vanderbilt Head Coach, Robbie Church
"We played hard, but Georgia played a bit harder. We had chances,
we battled, we fought. But so did Georgia, they fought a little bit
harder. And after the first goal, maybe we were a little too excited
and they came back strong."
Kate Elia, D, Sr.
"They took us out of our game. We were not as composed as we were
last night. We fell into their trap and did what they wanted us to
do."
Katie Stegall, D,Sr.
"Every ball was pressured. They played a really intense game. We did
not have an opportunity to do what we wanted."
Georgia Head Coach, Sue Patberg
"We fought hard. We knew the type of game they would come with, so
we knew what to expect coming in. Tonight we played 90 minutes without
any let-ups, we knew that's what we had to do. We were trying to use
all of our players and we have a great bench so we had confidence
in doing that."
Nicole Williams, GK,Sr.
"We just didn't want the season to end. We didn't have the regular
season that we wanted, so we felt that we had to make up for it."
Kristy Bongiovanni, MF, Sr.
"We played with a lot of heart because we didn't want to be done until
we had met our goals. We didn't feel like we had done that during
the regular season."
