Commodores Open Exhibition Season 11/1/01
The
Vanderbilt women's basketball team begins the 2002-03 season
tonight with exhibition action against the Athletes in Action.
Tipoff is set for 7 pm in Memorial Gym. The Commodores are
coming off a 30-7 season, including an SEC Tournament title
and second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional championship
game.
The Athletes in Action team is coming off a 73-54 win against
Murray State in Murray, Ky. last night. Katie Voigt led her
team with 19 points, followed by Mandy Arndtson with 15 and
Shea Mahoney and Katrena Carr with 10 each.
The Commodores return eight letterwinners, including three
starters from last season. Key returners for the Commodores
include Kodak All-American Chantelle Anderson (6-6, Sr., Center)
and All-SEC selection Ashley McElhiney (5-6, Sr., PG). Anderson
was recently named the SEC Preseason Player of the Year by
the media at the annual SEC Basketball Media Day. The media
picked the Commodores to finish third in the conference behind
Tennessee and LSU.
Vanderbilt will host the Reebok All Stars on Nov. 10 (Sunday)
at 1 pm and open regular season action on the road Nov. 23
(Saturday) when they play Boston University. The Commodores
home opener is Nov. 30 (Saturday) in first round action of
the First Tennessee Tournament. VU plays Youngstown State
at 1 pm, followed by Central Michigan and Harvard.
NOTE: The game will not be broadcast on the radio. The radio
broadcasts on WNSR AM begin with the first regular season
game, Nov. 23 at Boston University.
