COMMODORE GOLD NUGGETS

Mississippi State is the Commodore’s first SEC opponent for the third time ever. The series is tied at 1-1 with each team winning on its home court. VU lost in the last SEC opener matchup in Starkville, 71-62, on Dec. 8, 1999. Ashley McElhiney did not play in that contest due to a stress fracture in her foot - Chantelle Anderson scored 41 of VU’s 62 points
The game is a matchup of two of the SEC’s top players - VU’s Chantelle Anderson and MSU’s LaToya Thomas. Anderson beat out Thomas for the SEC Preseason Player of the Year prior to the season. Both are All-Americans and both earned ESPN the Magazine Awards last March. Anderson was named Center of the Year, while Thomas earned Power Forward of the Year.
