NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Ashley McElhiney scored 17 points as Vanderbilt beat Liberty 54-44 in the first round of the East Regional on Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Lady Commodores (22-9) play Boston College in the second round Monday.

Liberty (26-4), seeded 13th, trailed the entire game but closed to 37-34 on a layup by Katie Feenstra with a little over nine minutes remaining. Vanderbilt responded with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 13 with less then five minutes to go.

McElhiney made four of six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

The Lady Commodores led 31-21 at the break after shooting 44 percent in the first half. Liberty came into the game allowing opponents only 34 percent from the floor. The Lady Flames, meanwhile, shot 21 percent in the first half.

The teams also combined for 34 turnovers in the game, 18 by Vanderbilt.

Abi Ramsey was the only other scorer in double figures with 11 points. Chantelle Anderson added seven points and 10 rebounds.

Liberty was led by Daina Staugaitiene with 13 points. Kristal Tharp and Agne Jasinskaite each added 10 points, while Feenstra had seven points and 12 rebounds.
