Benningfield scored 12 of her 18 points in a six-minute
span in the second half to lead No. 18 Vanderbilt to a
64-58 win over struggling Florida on Sunday. The Commodores
(18-7, 8-4 Southeastern Conference) won their season-high
fifth in a row. The Gators (8-17, 0-12) extended their
school-record losing streak to 13 games.
The Gators cut the lead to 36-35 with 14:38 remaining
but Benningfield hit consecutive 3-pointers, and Vandy
pulled away from there. Benningfield's short, baseline
jumper gave the Commodores their largest lead of the
second half, 52-40 with 8:52 to play.
The Gators made it close after Vandy missed four consecutive
free throws in the final minute.
Hillary Hager sealed the victory by hitting the front
end of a one-and-one with 14.4 seconds left, making
it 62-58.
Florida hung tough against a ranked SEC team for the
first time this season. The Lady Gators had lost their
previous six games to ranked teams by an average of
33.7 points.
Benningfield has been Vanderbilt's hottest player during
the win streak, leading the team in scoring each time.
Abi Ramsey added 14 points, and Ashley McElhiney had
10 assists.
Sarah Lowe paced Florida with 14 points, 10 rebounds,
four assists and four steals. Vanessa Hayden chipped
in 12 points.
