Vanderbilt Women’s Golf Team To Play in NCAA East Regional 4/30/03
Commodores travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina

The No. 10 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores received an at-large bid to play in the 2003 NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional in Winston-Salem, NC, May 8-10. The East Regional, hosted by Wake Forest University, is a three-day, 54-hole event with 18 holes played each day at the Salem Glen Country Club. Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. each day off the first and tenth tees with the last tee time at 1:20 p.m.

“We are very excited about going to Winston Salem for the regionals,” head coach Martha Freitag said. “This is our first step in post-season to get to the NCAA Tournament.”

Duke is the No. 1 seed in the Region, followed by Arizona, and Auburn. A total of six Southeastern Conference teams were selected in the East Region, with two others (Florida, Arkansas) selected in the Central Region.

“Any time you get to tee it up with the No. 1 seed (Duke) - that is exciting”, Freitag added. “We have always thought that if you want to be the best, you have to play and beat the best.”

This is the fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA East Regional. The Commodores finished eighth last year, 10th in 2001 and 21st in 2000.

“The Golf Committee did an outstanding job making the three regions even and competitive, but I think the East Region is the toughest,” Freitag said.

The regional will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day. The top eight teams and top two individuals -- not on one of those eight teams -- advance on to the NCAA Championships May 20-23 at the Kampen Golf Course West Lafayette, Ind. (Purdue, host).

“We’re done with finals and we will be rested and focused. We have had good practices and we are thrilled to be playing in the regional,” Freitag concluded.
