Vanderbilt begins Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational Friday

Auburn, Ala. – The #2 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores are competing in their final fall tournament of the season today at the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala. Vanderbilt is coming off a second place finish at the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate Invitational (Oct. 18-20).

Junior Courtney Wood, who owns a stroke average of 73.77, has been bothered by an irritated costal cartilage (rib cage), but had a good practice round today and is ready to compete. Junior Sarah Jacobs has finished in the Top 5 in each tournament this fall and owns a team-leading 73.44 stroke average. Nicki Cutler, Joni Gossett and May Wood round out the Commodores’ entries. Cutler, the lone senior on the team owns a 75.11 stroke average, while Gossett owns a 78.50 mark and May Wood owns a stroke average of 74.77.

“We are looking forward to this tournament,” head coach Martha Freitag said. “There are a lot of great teams here and we have prepared well. We are going to go out and play the best golf we can.”

The Commodores are teamed with Arizona and South Carolina for the first round and will tee off at 8 am this morning (Nov. 1).

“We have a good pairing (Arizona and South Carolina) - we’ll go out and see how good we can play.” Freitag added.

The Commodores have competed in three tournaments so far this season. They finished third in the NCAA Fall Preview, second last week at the Stanford-Pepsi Intercollegiate and captured the Mason Rudolph Championship with a season low score of 878 (302-285-291).

Vanderbilt resumes action February 24-26 at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
