Vanderbilt Prominent in Golf World Rankings 9/6/02
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Golf World magazine has announced its preseason
and both Vanderbilt golf programs are well represented. The complete preseason
rankings and lists of players to watch will appear in the Sept. 6 issue of
Golf World magazine.
The Commodore women are ninth in the magazine's preseason poll
after finishing 18th last spring in their first trip to the NCAA Championship.
Other SEC schools in the top-25 poll include No. 2 Auburn, No. 4 Florida,
No. 6 Georgia and No. 21 Tennessee.
The women's squad also was honored with senior Nicki Cutler
and freshman May
Wood being included in the magazine's list of the Top-50 Female Players to
Watch. Cutler was an honorable mention All-America last year who shot below
par in three tournaments her junior year. Wood, a long driving 6-footer, was
a prep All-America who opened many eyes by winning the prestigious North-South
Amateur Championship at Pinehurst this summer.
"We believe we have a team that can win it all and these
that," said Vanderbilt Women's Head Coach Martha Freitag. "We have
talent, but we need more experience and more seasoning. If we can begin to
win tournaments in the regular season, then I think we have a great chance
to win the NCAAs."
On the men's side, senior Brandt Snedeker made the magazine's
list of the
Top-50 Male Players to Watch. Last season, Snedeker was named Second-Team
All-America by the Golf Coaches Association of America after becoming just
the second Commodore men's player ever and the first in the modern era to
advance to the NCAA Championship, where he finished tied for 23rd place.
Snedeker also was named First-Team All-SEC after posting nine Top-10 and
seven Top-6 finishes and leading the Commodores to a best-ever fourth-place
tie at the SEC Championship.
"We have a player in Brandt Snedeker that is a threat to
win every time we
tee it up," said Vanderbilt Men's Head Coach Press McPhaul. "Him
to this list proves there are others that believe he is a threat as well."
