WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES SIXTH AT WILDCAT INVITATIONAL
Junior Sarah Jacobs is VU’s Top Finisher in 25th Place

TUCSON, Arizona – The #3 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores shot a three-round total of 908 (297-307-304) to finish sixth at the 2003 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona. Pepperdine was the team champion with an 876 (294-292-290).

Junior Sarah Jacobs finished 25th with a 227 (73-77-77), followed by freshman May Wood in 33rd place with a 230 (74-73-83). Senior Nicki Cutler totaled a 232 (77-76-79) for a 41st place finish, while junior Courtney Wood shot rounds of 73-86-74 for a 233 abd 48th place finish. Sophomore Joni Gossett finished 57th with a 237 (82-81-74).

“I am very pleased with the majority of our golf,” Head Coach Martha Freitag said. “We got a chance to see what we need to work on to get ready for our next tournament. We are physically fit, but we just need to get back in tournament shape mentally. We need to maintain focus on all 18 holes and that will happen as we keep playing competitively,” Freitag added.

Erica Blasberg of Arizona won the individual title with rounds of 69-73-68 for a total of 210.

The Commodores travel to Columbia, South Carolina, for the Lady Gamecock Classice March 14-16.

WOMEN’S GOLF IN FIFTH AT WILDCAT INVITATIONAL AFTER SECOND DAY
Freshman May Wood Moves to Fourth; Sarah Jacobs in a Tie for 20th

TUCSON, Arizona – The #3 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores are tied for fifth place after shooting a 307 today in second round action of the 2003 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona. The Commodores started the day tied for third place after a first-round score of 297. Vanderbilt is 18 shots behind team-leader Pepperdine who shot a two-day total of 586 (294-292).

Freshman May Wood shot a 73 today to total a 147 and moved into a tie for fourth place. Sarah Jacobs shot a 77 and now totals 150 in 20th place. Nicki Cutler is in a tie for 36th with a 153 (77-76), followed by Courtney Wood in 64th with a 159 (73-86) and Joni Gossett in 76th with a 163 (82-81).

“We hit good shots today, but didn’t make as many birdies, “ Head Coach Martha Freitag said. “We’re playing pretty good golf and we’re in a good position to move up the leader board tomorrow - we just need to stick to our game plan and execute good shots.”

Erica Blasberg of host Arizona is the individual leader with a 142 (69-73).

Final round action begins tomorrow (Wednesday) with a shotgun start at 7:30 am MT.

Three Commodores in the Top 20

TUCSON, Arizona – The #3 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores are tied for third place after shooting a 13-over-par 297 in first round action of the 2003 Wildcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona.. Vanderbilt is seven shots behind team leader Arizona State who shot a six-over-par 290. Pepperdine is in second place with a 294 (+10). The Commodores are tied with host Arizona.

Juniors Sarah Jacobs (34-39) and Courtney Wood (35-38) each shot a 73 and are tied for 10th place. Freshman May Wood is tied for 15th place with a 74 (35-39), followed by senior Nicki Cutler in 37th place (41-36) and sophomore Joni Gossett in 76th place (44-38).

“We had a good start today and hit the ball well,” VU Head Coach Martha Freitag said. “We have a lot of good golf in us and we just need to clean up a few mistakes and have another great round tomorrow. We plan on just sticking to our game plan” Freitag added.

Erin Tone of Arizona State is the individual leader with a 68 (31-37).

Second round action begins tomorrow (Tuesday) with a shotgun start at 7:30 am MT.
