Vanderbilt Women's Golf Finishes 10th at Auburn Tiger
Courtney Wood is VU's highest finisher in 10th place
Alabama The Vanderbilt Commodores shot a 304 today
to total a 906 in final round action of the Auburn Tiger Derby
Invitational. Tennessee won the team title with a three-round
total of 871 (289-297-285) and seven over par performance.
Texas finished second, followed by Arizona, Duke, Auburn,
Florida, Southern Cal, South Carolina, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt,
Georgia, TCU and LSU.
Vanderbilt's Courtney Wood led the Commodores with a 10th
place finish shooting a three-round total of 221 (75-70-76).
Sarah Jacobs finished tied for 29th with a 227 (77-76-74),
followed by Joni Gosset in a tie for 40th (76-75-78=229),
Nicki Cutler in a tie for 47th (80-75-76=231) and May Wood
in a tie for 57th (81-75-80=235).
This was the last tournament of the Fall Season for the Commodores
who are currently ranked #2 in the nation. The Commodores
begin the Spring Season February 24-26 at the Wildcat Invitational
at Tucson, Ariz.

Women's Golf Team Shoots a 294 Today at Auburn Derby Invitaitonal
Junior Courtney Wood in tie for Eighth Place
Auburn, Ala. The Vanderbilt women's golf team shot
a round of 294 today, the second best score of the day, and
moved into 10th place at the Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational
with a two-round score of 602. The Commodores shot a 308 yesterday
in first round action.
Tennessee continues to lead the field with a 586 (289-297),
followed by Texas (588), Auburn (588), Arizona (589) and Duke
"We had a much better peformance today," Head Coach
Martha Freitag said. "Everyone played well and Nicki
(Cutler) and May (Wood) made a nice comeback."
Courtney Wood shot a team-low 70 today and now totals a 145
for a +1 and tie in eighth position. She is four strokes behind
the leader Summer Sirmons of Georgia who owns a 141 (69-72,
Joni Gossett owns a two-round total of 151 (76-75, +7), followed
by Sarah Jacobs (77-76=153, +9), May Wood (81-74=155, +11)
and Cutler (80-75=155, +11).
"Today's performance helps put us in a good position
to move up tomorrow," Freitag added.
Final round action begins at 8 am Sunday with a shotgun start.

Golf Has Tough Day at Auburn Derby Tournament 11/1/02
Auburn, Ala. The Vanderbilt women's golf team had a tough
day on the course shooting a 308 for an 11th place finish
after first-round action at the Auburn Derby Invitational.
The par 72, 6,262 yard event is being hosted by Auburn University.
Tennessee leads the field with a 289, followed by Auburn
(291), Duke (294), Texas (294), Arizona (296), and Southern
Junior Courtney Wood led the Commodores with a 75 for 26th
place. Sophomore Joni Gossett, playing in the fifth position,
shot a 76 for 33rd place, followed by Sarah Jacobs in 421st
place (77), Nicki Cutler in 56th place (80) and May Wood in
59th place (81).
"We have some growing up to do as a team," Head
Coach Martha Freitag said. "We took a step sideways today.
Nicki (Cutler) and May (Wood) have to be better. Joni (Gossett)
did a great job today playing the fifth position. She did
what we needed her to do," Freitag added.
The Commodores are 19 shots behind leader Tennessee and five-shots
behind the 10th place team Florida.
"This was no more or no less than just a bad day on
the golf course," Freitag said. "With this field,
it is hard to make up ground, but I'm confident that the team
will step up to the challenge."
Second round action continues tomorrow with the tournament
concluding on Sunday.
