Day 1
Vanderbilt Golf Has Tough Day at Auburn Derby Tournament
11/1/02

Auburn, Ala. The Vanderbilt women's golf team had a tough day on the course shooting a 308 for an 11th place finish after first-round action at the Auburn Derby Invitational. The par 72, 6,262 yard event is being hosted by Auburn University.

Tennessee leads the field with a 289, followed by Auburn (291), Duke (294), Texas (294), Arizona (296), and Southern Cal (296).

Junior Courtney Wood led the Commodores with a 75 for 26th place. Sophomore Joni Gossett, playing in the fifth position, shot a 76 for 33rd place, followed by Sarah Jacobs in 421st place (77), Nicki Cutler in 56th place (80) and May Wood in 59th place (81).

"We have some growing up to do as a team," Head Coach Martha Freitag said. "We took a step sideways today. Nicki (Cutler) and May (Wood) have to be better. Joni (Gossett) did a great job today playing the fifth position. She did what we needed her to do," Freitag added.

The Commodores are 19 shots behind leader Tennessee and five-shots behind the 10th place team Florida.

"This was no more or no less than just a bad day on the golf course," Freitag said. "With this field, it is hard to make up ground, but I'm confident that the team will step up to the challenge."

Second round action continues tomorrow with the tournament concluding on Sunday.
