Hahn Finishes Ninth in USATF Heptathlon; Ryan Tolbert Finishes
Sixth In 400 Hurdles Finals 6/21/03
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Versatile Vanderbilt athlete Josie Hahn
posted a career best in the javelin and solid performances
in the long jump and 800-meter run Friday enroute to a ninth
place heptathlon finish in the USATF Track and Field Championships.
Hahn finished a busy week of competition in style Friday
on the Stanford University campus, tossing the javelin 138’6”
moments after uncorking an 18’3” long jump, the
second best jump of her career. She finished the event with
a 2:22.59 800-meter effort, just .26 off her personal best
set last week during a fourth place performance at the NCAA
Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Hahn, a rising junior who also set a new Vanderbilt high
jump record of 5’11.25” during the first day of
heptathlon competition Thursday, finished the event with 5,408
points, missing eighth place by just six points. She started
the final day of events in 11th place.
A former Commodore standout, Ryan Tolbert, failed in her
goal of making the USA team in the 400-meter hurdles. The
former NCAA champion finished sixth Saturday with a season
best time of 56.33. The top three finishers advance to the
National team.
Though Hahn did not make the three-person USA heptathlon
team, she may qualify for other international competitions
this summer, according to Vanderbilt coach Lori Shepard. Hahn
could earn an invitation to a number of competitions contested
by American teams, including the Pan-American Games.
Hahn battled through the two-day competition trying to overcome
a poor start in the 100-meter hurdles, the first of seven
heptathlon events. After running a second slower than her
personal best in the hurdles, Hahn came back with a new school
record in the high jump, a personal best in the javelin and
200 meters, and near career bests in the shot put, long jump
and shot put. She finished the competition with the second
highest point ever by a Commodore heptathlete, just 36 points
shy of her school record set at the NCAA Championships last
week.
Two-time national champion Shelia Burrell captured the USATF
heptathlon with 6,169 points. Former collegiate champions
Kim Schiemenz and Tiffany Lott-Hogan finished second and third
with 6,003 and 5,843 points, respectively.
