Hahn Sets Second High Jump Mark in Two Weeks; Ryan Tolbert Also
Advances to USATF Hurdle Semifinals 6/20/03
PALO
ALTO, Calif. - Vanderbilt’s Josie Hahn eclipsed the
team high jump record for the second time in a week, clearing
5’11.25” Thursday as the heptathlon competition
got underway at the United States Track and Field Championships.
Hahn, who set the former mark of 5’10.75” while
finishing fourth in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
last week in Sacramento, cleared the new standard on her second
attempt. She shared the best high jump in the competition
with two-time USA team member Kim Schiemenz.
Despite the new school record, Hahn is behind last week’s
NCAA point total midway through the heptathlon. After the
first full day, Hahn stands 11th in the field of 16 heptathletes
with 3,189 points. Last week, she accumulated 3,257 points
during the first day of competition. The heptathlon concludes
with three events Friday.
In other Vanderbilt-related action at the USATF Championships,
former Commodore standout Ryan Tolbert advanced in her specialty,
the 400-meter hurdles. Tolbert, hoping to make the USA national
team, qualified for the semifinals scheduled Friday with a
58.39 clocking. The hurdle finals are scheduled Saturday on
the Stanford University campus.
Hahn, who holds four team records for the Commodores, fell
behind in the overall heptathlon after the first event, posting
a disappointing 15.60 time in the 100-meter hurdles. She ran
the hurdles in 14.93 last week at the NCAA Championships.
Hahn used the personal best and team record in the high jump
to briefly move into the top eight in the event. In the high
jump, Hahn converted on a third attempt at 5’8.75”,
then scaled 5’10” on her first attempt. She set
the new school record with a clearance on her second attempt.
Hahn had three unsuccessful tries at 6’0.5”.
Hahn finished the first day of competition with a 38’7”
shot put and 26.09 clocking in the 200-meter hurdles. At the
NCAA championships, she achieved 39’1.25” and
26.29 efforts in the shot put and 200 meters, respectively.
Schiemenz and two-time USATF champion Sheila Burrell are
leading the heptathlon with 3,617 and 3,560 points, respectively.
Hahn trails the eighth place competitor by less than 100 points.
