Vanderbilt Freshman Schneble Wins 5,000 Meters At Kentucky SEC Track & Field Challenge Saturday

Lexington, Kent. - Vanderbilt freshman distance runner Erika Schneble earned her second consecutive indoor win by capturing the 5,000 meters at the Kentucky SEC Challenge Saturday.

Schneble, from Hendersonville, N.C., ran 17:24.13 in defeating a conference field that included Lauren Burks of Georgia and Katie Flaute of Tennessee. Two weeks ago, the freshman won her first collegiate indoor race at 3,000 meters in Columbus, Ohio.

Schneble’s effort, the third fastest 5,000 meters ever indoors by a Vanderbilt runner, was the Commodores’ top performance Saturday. The team finished eighth with 23 total points. South Carolina, a national track and field power, easily won the meet with 170 total points.

Joy Parker used a career best performance to claim fifth place in the 800 meters. The senior knocked three seconds off her previous best effort at the distance, running 2:15.26.

Josie Hahn, the Commodores’ most versatile athlete, earned points in the high jump (5’7.75”) and 60-meter hurdles (9.19).

The Commodores return to competition next weekend at the Cannon IV Invitational in Indianapolis.
