| Two Vanderbilt Freshmen
and Sophomore Vaulter Score Event Wins Saturday at Buckeye
Invitational 1/11/03
Columbus, Ohio - Individual wins by sophomore pole
vaulter Paige Roberts and a pair of freshmen distance
runners provided the top highlights for the Vanderbilt
womens track and field team at the Buckeye Invitational
Saturday.
Roberts, a school indoor recordholder, cleared 115.75
on her second attempt to over Ohio States Becky
Heintz to win the vault event, while freshmen Caitlin
Shannon and Erika Schneble scored impressively victories
in the mile and 3,000-meters, respectively.
Team scores were not kept for the early season meet,
which featured numerous athletes competing unattached,
including Vanderbilt graduate and former NCAA champion
Ryan Tolbert. The Commodore assistant coach made a triumphant
return to competitive racing after a one-year absence
by winning the 600-meters in 1:33.77.
Shannon, a native of DePere, Wisc., captured the mile
in 5:29.90. Schneble, a product of Hendersonville, N.C.
coming off a superb cross country season, won the 3,000
meters comfortably in 10:25.66.
Cicely Campbell, the Ohio native and Vanderbilt senior
returning from knee injury, narrowly missed winning
the 800 meters, losing by .03 seconds to Tamecia Brown
of Ohio State.
The Commodores return to competition Saturday, January
25, traveling to Lexington for the Kentucky Invitational.
