NASHVILLE,
Tenn - The Vanderbilt Commodores women's team totaled 165
points for a second place finish in the 2002 Vanderbilt Track
and Field Invitational. Tennessee State edged out the Commodores
for first place with 166.5 total points. Middle Tennessee
was third with 88.5 points, followed by Tennessee Tech (65),
Rhodes College (52), Murray State (43), Austin Peay (43, Western
Kentucky (39), UT-Martin (16, Alabama-Huntsville (14), Alabama
A&M (14), Life University (5) and Lipscomb (5).
One
of the highlights of the meet was the performance of Tasha
Jenkins a member of Team USA who was competing unattached.
She clocked what is believed to be two of the best times in
the world this year - a 11:05 time in the 100-meter dash and
a 22.59 mark in the 200-meters
"The
spectators that came out today were treated with many thrilling
peformances including Tasha Jenkins' in the 100 and 200 meters
- she made it look so easy," Vanderbilt head coach Lori
Shepard said.
The
Commodores set many personal best marks in the meet. Josie
Hahn scored in three events taking first place honors in the
high jump with a mark of 5-8. She also placed second in the
javelin (121-1) and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.25).
Kylene Kownurko took first place in the 1500 meters with a
time of 4:33.73 and Ann Machalinski won first place honors
in the 3000 meters with a 10:16.70 clocking. Other Commodore
scorers in the 1500 meters included Jocelyn Theriault (4:48.04,
7th) and Dara Crocker (4:50.63, 8th). Angeline Cione finished
ninth with a 4:55.54 time.
In
the 400 Meters, Vanessa Lagios placed fourth (59.79), followed
by Veronica Shead in fifth place with a time of 60.86. Andrea
Andrews placed sixth in the 100-meters with a 12.38 time and
was seventh in the 200 meters with a 25.70 mark. Tara Gregory
finished third in the 400 meters (2:13.78). The Commodores
scored 11 points in the 5000 meters with Jessica Holt finished
second with a time of 18:13.18 and Lauren Price taking sixth
with a 18:39 mark.
Three
Commodores took Top Seven marks in the 100 meter hurdles,
led by Asiah Hodgen in second place with a time of 14.79.
Josie Hahn was fifth (15.25) and Farrah Kohorst was seventh
(15.67). In the 400 meter hurdles, Asiah Hodgen took second
in the 400 meter hurdles (61.84), followed by Autumn Smith
with a time of 62.39.
Vanderbilt
took second and third place in the 4 x 400 meter relay with
Team A claiming a second place finish (3:52.26), followed
by Team B in third place with a 3:58.11 mark.
In
the pole vault, Lauren Tinsley took first place (11-4.25),
followed by Paige Roberts in second (11-0.25). Vansherrie
Campbell claimed the discus throw title with a throw of 143-07
and took fifth place in the shot put with a 40-00.50 mark.
Campbell also finished in third place in the hammer with a
throw of 141-08.
"The
beauty of a track meet is that you can "win" even
if you do not cross the finish line first, throw the farthest,
jump the highest," Shepard added. Yes, we won some events,
but just about every athlete had a least one PR (personal
record) this weekend and it is those continued individual
improvements that will make this team successful."
On
the men's side, Tennessee took the top team honor with 125
points. Tennessee State was second (112.5), followed by Murray
State (89), Middle Tennessee (82), Life University (71), Western
Kentucky (57), Rhodes College (46), Alabama A&M (37),
Sewanee (34.5), Lindsey Wilson (9), Bethel College (8), Berry
College (7), Memphis (5) and Vanderbilt (1).
Nitin
Jhamb scored Vanderbilt's point with an eighth place finish
in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:47.33.
