Commodores
Well-Represented in NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments
5/2/03
Six Players to Participate in an Individual Capacity
NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - Vanderbilt senior womens tennis player Sarah
Riske (McMurray, Pa.) and junior mens tennis player
Bobby Reynolds (Acworth, Ga.) headline six entries for the
Commodores to NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which
run from May 19-24. The womens tournament will be held
on the campus of the University of Florida, while the mens
competition will take place at the University of Georgia.
The 15th-ranked Riske will compete in both the singles and
doubles tournament. She was Vanderbilts only entry into
the singles draw. Junior Aleke Tsoubanos (Chesterfield,
Mo.), who is ranked 80th nationally, was named the fourth
alternate for the singles competition.
Riske and Tsoubanos, who earned All-American honors in 2002,
will also compete in the doubles. The former No. 1-ranked
team in the nation, who currently are ranked third, are one
of 32 teams that will contend for an NCAA title. Riske and
Tsoubanos, who are Vanderbilts all-time winningest doubles
team, have compiled an outstanding 28-5 record for the 2002-03
season.
Tournament seedings have not been announced for the womens
singles and doubles draws.
The
mens singles draw is headlined by Reynolds, who
was named the top seed for the tournament. The top-ranked
player in the country had an outstanding season in helping
lead the Commodores to their first SEC Tournament Championship.
Besides being the first Vanderbilt mens tennis player
to ever earn a No. 1 ranking, he was also named the SEC Player
of the Year and the SEC Tournaments Most Outstanding
Player. He will head into the NCAA Tournament with a 40-6
singles record.
Junior Chad Harris (Aurora, Colo.) will join Reynolds in the
singles draw, as he was seeded 9-16 alphabetically.
The All-SEC First Team member has helped provide the Commodores
with one of the best 1-2 punches in the country, along with
Reynolds. Harris is currently ranked 16th, but has been as
high as ninth. He has won 31 singles matches in 2002-03.
The mens team also received good news as two doubles
