| Smith Falls in Opening
Round of Qualifying at ITA All-American Championship 10/9/02
CHATTANOOGA,
Tenn. Junior Lewis Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) fell in the
opening round of the qualifying draw to No. 15-ranked Felix
Hardt of San Diego State at the Icy Hot/ITA Mens All-American
Championship, falling in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
The ITA All-American main draw begins on Thursday and will
feature Vanderbilt All-American Bobby Reynolds (Acworth, Ga.),
who enters as the No. 9 seed. Along with Reynolds, junior
Chad Harris (Aurora, Colo.) will also compete in singles draw,
while Lewis and Reynolds will take part in doubles competition.
Harris is ranked No. 38 nationally by the ITA, while the
tandem of Reynolds and Lewis enter with a doubles ranking
of No. 19.
Mens tennis head coach Ken Flach had five other members
of his squad take part in the pre-qualifying round. Senior
Josh Tarkoff (Miami, Fla.) won two rounds in the singles draw
before losing to North Carolinas Nicholas Monroe, 6-2,
6-0.
Junior Zach Dailey (Memphis, Tenn.) fell in the second round
Daniel Jung, 6-1, 7-6. Finally, sophomore Matthew Lockin (Lilburn,
Ga.) was defeated by Louisvilles Paulo Carvalho 6-1,
6-1 in the second round.
