Men's
Tennis Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over Georgia State,
5-1 3/14/03
ATLANTA,
Ga. - The No. 21-ranked Vanderbilt men's tennis team
will head to Gainesville, Fla. for its showdown with
No. 2-ranked Florida on Sunday riding a six-match winning
streak, as it defeated No. 62-ranked Georgia State,
5-1, on Friday afternoon. With the win, Vanderbilt moves
its overall record to 10-1 overall, while Georgia State
falls to 8-6. The Commodores also avenged a, 4-3, loss
to the Panthers back in 1999.
The Commodores were not able to extend their streak
of winning the doubles point, as the three doubles matches
were cancelled due to the potential of poor weather
in the Atlanta area.
Head coach Ken Flach's squad, however, was able to take
care of business in singles. Junior Bobby Reynolds,
who is the No. 2 player in the country, extended his
win streak to 18, as he cruised by Albano Franco in
straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. Reynolds
now stands at 28-5 for the 2002-03 season.
Junior Chad Harris notched his 23rd win of the year,
as the 13th-ranked player in the country had to battle
by Matias Ormaza in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at the
No. 2 position. Harris is now 8-1 in dual matches.
Vanderbilt
continued to have success at the No. 4, No. 5 and No.
6 positions. Junior Zach Dailey was also pushed to three
sets against Luka Bernard at the No. 4 spot, but was
able to win despite dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-3,
6-4. Sophomore Scott Brown had no problems with Nicolas
Lupica at the No. 5 position, as he won in straight
sets, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Lewie Smith closed things out
at the sixth singles position, as he defeated Chris
Mangone, 6-1, 6-0. Dailey, Brown and Smith are a combined
27-3 in dual matches.
The
Commodores return to action at 1 p.m. (EST) Sunday for
their showdown with No. 2-ranked Florida in Gainesville,
Fla. at the Ring Tennis Complex.
