Freshman Becomes Eighth Vanderbilt Player to Earn All-MVC Recognition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Kyle Lapkewych (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) became the eighth Vanderbilt men’s soccer player to earn All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, as he was named to the honorable mention team for the 2002 season. He becomes only the second Vanderbilt freshman to earn All-MVC recognition. Jimmy Stone was named to the MVC All-Newcomer team in 2000.

Lapkewych had a solid freshman season for first-year head coach Tim McClements. While playing in 13 of the Commodores’ 18 games, eight of which he started, Lapkewych was regularly called upon to mark the opponents top player. He also was solid contributor to Vanderbilt’s offense, as he finished with one goal, two assists and seven shots on the season.

The freshman’s only goal came during the 2002 season came against cross-town foe Belmont in the inagural game at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. With time winding down in regulation, Lapkewych scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining to give Vanderbilt the win. His two assists came against MVC foes Bradley and Eastern Illinois.
