Men’s Soccer Ends Losing Streak; Defeats Evansville, 3-1 10/27/02
Commodores Score Season-High Three Goals In Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team ended an eight-game losing streak and picked up its first Missouri Valley Conference victory on Sunday at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The Commodores defeated Evansville, 3-1.

With the win, Vanderbilt moves to 3-14 overall and 1-7 in the MVC, while Evansville fall to 7-8-2 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Vanderbilt’s three goals was its highest scoring output of the 2002 season. It was also the Commodores third win in 13 meetings against the Purple Aces.

After a scoreless first half, the game got exciting from an offensive standpoint in the second half. Freshman Brent Richard tallied his first collegiate goal after he beat Evansville goalkeeper Ed Moore one-on-one in the 56th minute. Richard’s goal came off a pass from midfielder Steve Chromik, who recorded his third career assist.

Senior Charlie White kept things going, scoring his first goal of the season in the 71st minute. White gathered a rebound off of a save by Moore and slid the ball into the near corner. For White, it was his 15th career goal.

With time running out in the game, Evansville got on the board after forward Chris Binder delivered a perfect cross into the box, which forward Andre Talley headed past goalkeeper Brad Winter. The Purple Aces continued to attack, but was not able to convert.

In the 90th minute, the Commodores put the game away when defender Chris Yingling sent a long ball down the field off a free kick, and forward Brian Lamping collected the aball and eventually slid the ball past Moore into the far corner. For Lamping, it was is first goal of the season.

Winter had another outstanding game in net, as he finished with nine saves to give him 18 for the season.

The Commodores close out the 2002 season at 7 p.m. Friday, November 1, when they take on Missouri Valley Conference foe Western Kentucky at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
