10/20/02
DALLAS,
Texas - With the Vanderbilt mens soccer team looking
to end a six-game losing streak, the last thing it needed
to see was No. 6-ranked Southern Methodist. Unfortunately
for the Commodores, they lost their seventh straight game,
as the Mustangs won 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field.
With the loss, the Commodores fall to 2-13 overall and 0-6
in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Mustangs up their
mark to 12-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs took it to the Commodores right from the opening
whistle and wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, as
forward Duke Hashimoto collected his fourth goal of the season
at the second minute of the game off a feed from forward Ryan
Latham. Midfielder Kellan Zindel gave SMU a 2-0 lead in the
35th minute, as he scored his sixth goal of the season. Midfiedler
David Chun kept things going as he recorded his first collegiate
goal in the 53rd minute to give SMU a 3-0 lead. Defender Toti
Suarez topped off the Mustang scoring with a successful penalty
kick in the 57th minute after Zindel was taken down in the
box by a Vanderbilt player.
SMU dominated the game in every aspect, including outshooting
the Commodores by a 22-3 margin. The Mustangs also had 10
corner kicks to the Commodores one.
The Commodores will look for their first win in the MVC at

at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The Bears lead the all-time
series, 4-3-1.
