Mens Soccer Loses To MVC Foe Tulsa, 3-1 10/18/02
DeMello Records Sixth Goal of Season in Loss
TULSA,
Okla. - The Vanderbilt mens soccer team continues its
season long struggle, as it fell to Tulsa 3-1 on Friday evening
at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex. The Golden Hurricane
victory avenged last seasons 2-1 OT loss to the Commodores
back in Nashville. With the loss, Vanderbilt falls to 2-12
overall and 0-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Tulsa
moves to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the MVC.
Vanderbilts only goal of the evening came in the 54th
minute, when senior Nik DeMello scored on Tulsa goalkeeper
Brent Satler. For DeMello, it was his sixth goal of the season,
and it tied him for eighth on the all-time Vanderbilt goal-scoring
list with 20 (Pat Galvin - 20, 1988-91).
Tulsa received offensive output from several players. Midfielder
Mario Gonzalez finished the evening with one goal and one
assist, while midfielder Derek Myers also chipped in with
one goal and one assist. On the three goals the Golden Hurricane
registered, they had five assists to go along with them.
Vanderbilt was outshot 18-7 for the contest, while goalkeeper
Brad Winter recorded eight saves on top of allowing three
goals. Satler made four saves in net for Tulsa to go along
with allowing the one goal.
The Commodores will look to end their losing skid at 3 p.m.
Sunday when they take on No. 6-ranked Southern Methodist at
Westcott Field in Dallas. The Mustangs lead the all-time series
with the Commodores, 4-0.
