Men’s Soccer Drops MVC Contest to Drake, 2-1

DES MOINES, Iowa – When forward Danny Sable scored the opening goal of the game on Friday night against Drake, it was the third-consecutive game the Vanderbilt men’s soccer team had scored the opening goal. Unfortunately, the Commodores dropped their third-straight game with scoring the first goal, as it fell to the Bulldogs, 2-1. With the loss, Vanderbilt falls to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Drake moves to 5-4-1 and 1-0-1 in the conference.

Sable got the Commodores on the board in the 20th minute when he dribbled through the Bulldog defense and then slid the ball past Drake goalkeeper Zach Breenan. Sable finished the game with two shots, both of which were on net.

The Bulldogs struck back in the 36th minute when Chris Hamburger slid the ball past Vanderbilt goalkeeper Brad Winter after collecting a rebound. The game-winning goal for Drake came five minutes later, when Matt Nickell scored following an assist from Jess Richey in the 41st minute.

Drake finished the game with 16 shots, while Vanderbilt was only able to muster-up nine shots. Midfielder Jack Hartley led Vanderbilt with three shots. The Bulldogs also had four corner kicks, while the Commodores did not have one opportunity.

Vanderbilt looks to end a four-game losing streak at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when it takes on MVC power Creighton in Omaha, Neb. The Bluejays lead the all-time series, 4-0-1.
