Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker To Appalachian State, 2-1 9/15/02

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite outshooting Appalachian State 25-9 for the game, the Commodores’ men’s soccer team fell to the Mountaineers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Vanderbilt/Puma Soccer Classic at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

All-tournament member Keon McPherson slipped by the Commodores’ defense in the 84th minute following a long pass from Brandon Garner and beat Vanderbilt goalkeeper Brad Winter one-on-one to score the game-winning goal.

Vanderbilt’s offense was in total control for the majority of the game, as this was evident by the lopsided shot advantage it had against Appalachian State; however, the Commodores were only able to get the ball in the back of the net once.

Forward Nik DeMello scored in the 10th minute of the game when he buried a shot in the far corner of the net following a precise pass from forward Charlie White. White had a solid afternoon, as he finished with the assist and six shots. DeMello’s goal ended a Vanderbilt scoreless drought, which had last for over 279 minutes.

The Mountaineers jumped on the board less than five minutes into the game when Carter Parrish pounded home a rebound following a shot by Fredrik Henriksen, which Vanderbilt goalkeeper Brad Winter made an incredible save on. Winter finished the game with two saves, while Appalachian State goalkeeper Greg Brooks allowed only one goal and registered nine saves.

In the first game of the afternoon, Loyola Marymount defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-1. Despite LMU and Appalachian State finishing with perfect records in the tournament, Loyola Marymount was crowned champion because of goal differential. LMU midfielder Kevin Novak was name the MVP of the tournament.

Vanderbilt returns to action at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Friday, September 20, when it takes on the Yale University in the first round of the Yale/Campus Invitational in New Haven, Conn. The Commodores will close out the tournament on Sunday at 12 p.m. (EST) against Brown University.
