Men’s Soccer Falls To Florida Atlantic, 7-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt men’s team (1-2) had an unfortunate setback on Sunday afternoon as it fell to Florida Atlantic University (2-2) 7-0 at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. For the Commodores, it was their worse loss since falling to Creighton 7-0 back in 1997.

One of the only bright spots for the Commodores on this afternoon was the fact they outshot the Owls, 19-11. Fifteen of their 19 shots came in the second half. Vanderbilt’s offense had several scoring opportunities in the second half; however, it was not able to slide one past either FAU goalkeepers, Anders Granstad or Alex Figuero.The two goalies combined for seven saves in combining for the shutout.

Midfielder Mike Rubin and forward Bjeorn Totland both had big offensive outputs for Florida Atlantic. Rubin tallied one goal and two assists for a total of four points, while Totland assisted on three of FAU’s seven goals. The Commodores hurt themselves, as they scored two own goals on themselves following defensive mishaps.

Forwards Jimmy Stone and Nik DeMello and midfielder Jeff Baker each tallied three shots apiece for the Commodores. The Commodores hurts themselves with 10 offside calls, several of which came on potential scoring opportunities.

Vanderbilt will return to action at 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 13, when it takes on the Appalachian State University in Vanderbilt/Puma Soccer Classic at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The tournament will kick off with Loyola Marymount and Eastern Illinois playing at 6 p.m.
