Mens Soccer Falls At Home To Alabama A&M, 3-0
9/3/02
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt mens soccer team dropped
its first game of the 2002 season on Tuesday night when it
fell to Alabama A&M 3-0 at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
The Commodores drop to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs,
who entered ranked No. 10 in the most recent National Soccer
Coaches Association of America Southeast poll, move to 3-0.
The Bulldogs, whose roster consist of 10 international players,
got on the board first in the 27th minute when they received
an own goal after the ball bounced off a Vanderbilt defender
and went into the net. The goal was set up off an initial
corner kick from defender Musa Gibba.
The Commodores had a chance to knot the game up at 1-1 in
the 29th minute when midfielder Jack Hartley blasted a shot
from around 30 yards out, which Alabama A&M goalkeeper
James Ssemambo just got a hand on.
Despite being behind 1-0 at the end of the first half, the
Commodores defense held strong despite going up against
a strong Bulldog offense. The Bulldogs outshot the Commodores
7-4 for the first half.
Alabama A&M stretched the lead to 2-0 in the second half
when forward Eugene Supuya scored off a penalty kick in the
73rd minute after being tripped in the box by Vanderbilt goalkeeper
Matt Gotterer. The Bulldogs sealed the game in the 83rd minute
when Sepuya broke away from the Vanderbilt defense and scored
one-on-one against Gotterer.
Despite giving up three goals, Gotterer had a solid game in
net for Vanderbilt. The senior finished with six saves, while
being tested the entire evening. The Bulldogs outshot the
Commodores 16-9. One story during the game was the number
of fouls, as both team were called 20 times apiece for violations.
Vanderbilt also picked up three yellow cards, while Alabama
A&M had one.
The mens soccer team returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday,
September 8, when they take on Florida Atlantic at Vanderbilt
Soccer Complex.
