Men’s Soccer Notches 4-2 Exhibition Victory Over Berry College 8/24/02

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. - With Tim McClements making his head coaching debut for the Vanderbilt men’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon, the Commodores defeated NAIA power Berry College, 4-2, in an exhibition game at Moss Wright Soccer Complex.

Vanderbilt fell behind in the 36th minute when Tommy Maurer knocked home a rebound past the outstretched arms of Commodore goalkeeper Matthew Gotterer from about 10 yards out. Berry College would maintain its lead for the remainder of the first half. The Commodores only managed three shots in the first half compared to the Vikings’ four.

McClements and the rest of the team’s luck would change in the second half as they scored three unanswered goals over a 15-minute span to take a convincing 3-1 lead. The first goal was tallied by junior Brian Lamping, who drilled a shot from around eight yards out off a cross from sophomore Steve Chromik. The second and third goals were assisted by defender Chris Yingling. The first goal came from senior Nik DeMello, who drilled a shot into the far corner from around 10 yards out. Senior William Perez recorded the next goal, when he flicked a header in the net following a pass off the head of Yingling.

The Vikings cut the lead to 3-2 less than two minutes later when Greg Young scored on a penalty kick after being fouled in the Vanderbilt box. The Commodores put the game out of reach in the 73rd minute when sophomore Mason DeMello and junior Jack Hartley assisted on sophomore Ryan Paugh’s goal, which he headed into the back of the net.

Vanderbilt outshot Berry College, 20-5, for the game and had 10 more corner kicks then the Vikings (12-2).

The Commodores will take on another NAIA opponent in Union College (Ky.) at 1 p.m. Monday in their final exhibition game before they kick off the season Friday, August 30 against cross-town rival Belmont at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
