Freije, Commodores Dominate in Exhibition Win 91-70 11/15/02

Vanderbilt defeated Upstate New York 91-70 Friday night at Memorial Gym. Junior Matt Freije picked up right where he left off Monday night as he poured in all of his 21 points, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, in the first half.

Whether it was freshman Mario Moore sprinting down the sideline, sophomore Corey Smith's behind-the-back pass, or Matt Freije's thundering dunk in the lane, the fans at Memorial Gym were witnessing a very exciting style of play for this year's squad. The Commodores were not all flash though, they routinely illustrated sound fundamentals with solid screens, pinpoint entry passes, and relentlessly attacked every rebound.

Vanderbilt opened the game with an obvious emphasis on the outside game. After proving the 'Dores could score on the inside against the Globetrotters, Vanderbilt hoisted several outside jumpshots including 13 3-pointers in the first half. The Commodores were helped to an early lead with some very sloppy play by Upstate New York including to 5 turnovers in the early going.

The Commodores doubled up the opposition as the half ended 50-25.

With Upstate New York opening the second half with a 13-2 run, freshman Mario Moore single-handedly shifted the momentum back to Vanderbilt. Moore began the series by hustling on the defensive end and causing a turnover. On the next possession, Mario nailed a wide open 3-pointer followed by another bucket from beyond the arc just a minute later. Moore finished the game with 12 points and 4 assists.

Sophomore David Przybyszewski also had a big game scoring 14 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. Perhaps the most entertaining possession of the game came when point guard Russell Lakey drove the lane and delivered a pass to David right at the basket. Przybyszewski missed the shot, missed the tip-in, missed the next tip-in, and finally grabbed the loose ball and drained a 3 pointer. David, proving he has 3-point range, proceeded to bury another long range jumper on the next possession.

The Commodores return to action November 22 as the 'Dores open the regular season by hosting Southeastern Louisiana at 7 pm.
